John J Enneking
(1840-1916)
Enneking was born in Ohio..
He grew up an orphan.
With the outbreak of the Civil War,
Enneking joined a Western Regiment
where he was severely wounded.
He survived and in 1864 moved
to Boston and began a career in Art.
Lithography was where Enneking
began his training. After two years
he found
this was of no interest.
In 1866 he became a tin tradesman, but
the draw to paint pulled him back.
Enneking went to Europe in 1872 for
four years of study in Munich and Paris.
Then Enneking returned to Boston.
He joined the Boston Art Club,
serving twice as President,
and through hard work he became the godfather of the Boston art community
and one of America's top Impressionists.
Here are a few examples from his career.
